Striped Marsh Frog

description Striped Marsh Frog Overview

The Striped Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes peronii) is a common ground-dwelling frog found along the eastern coast of Australia from northern Queensland through New South Wales, Victoria, and into Tasmania. Adults reach roughly 6-7 cm in body length and are marked by bold pale or cream stripes running lengthwise along the back. The species breeds in still or slow-moving water such as ponds, dams, flooded ditches, and garden pools, and its repetitive 'tok' call is among the most frequently heard frog calls in suburban eastern Australia. It tolerates disturbed and urban habitats and is listed as Least Concern.

help Striped Marsh Frog FAQ

What does a striped marsh frog sound like?

Its call is a short repeated "tok," "plonk," or "poc," often compared with a hammer striking an anvil. Males usually call while concealed in vegetation at the edge of still water.

Will striped marsh frogs live in a backyard pond?

Yes. Limnodynastes peronii readily colonizes garden ponds along eastern Australia if there is still water and protective vegetation.

Do striped marsh frogs eat other frogs?

They are opportunistic predators and can eat insects, spiders, and animals small enough to swallow. Documented prey includes smaller frogs, so they are not limited to insects.

What do striped marsh frog eggs look like?

Females lay their eggs in floating foam masses attached to reeds or other aquatic vegetation. These rafts occur in still or very slow-moving water, including dams, ditches, pools, and flooded grassland.
