Subway Series

The modern Subway Series refers to regular-season interleague games between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets of Major League Baseball. The term originated in the mid-twentieth century when three New York teams—the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants—all played in the city.

The most recent Subway Series World Series took place in 2000, when the Yankees defeated the Mets in five games. Prior to that, the term applied to all-New York World Series matchups between the Yankees and either the Brooklyn Dodgers or New York Giants before both franchises relocated to California in the 1950s.

The name comes from the fact that fans of the competing New York teams could travel between their respective ballparks using the New York City Subway system. The term gained popularity in the era when the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants all played within the city's subway network.

The Yankees and Mets play each other annually as part of MLB's interleague play schedule, typically facing off in a home-and-home series totaling four to six games per season. The exact number can vary depending on the league's annual scheduling format.
