Suddenly, Last Summer

Sebastian Venable's death is the central mystery of the 1959 film, which is slowly revealed through the conflicting testimonies of his cousin Catharine (Elizabeth Taylor) and his mother Violet (Katharine Hepburn). He is ultimately killed and cannibalized by a group of starving young men on a beach in Spain.

While the film is based on Tennessee Williams' one-act play, the screenplay adaptation was actually written by Gore Vidal. The movie was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and heavily censored by the Production Code Administration due to its dark themes.

The movie received three nominations at the 32nd Academy Awards, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Katharine Hepburn and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Elizabeth Taylor. Despite the critically acclaimed performances, it did not win any Oscars that year.

Montgomery Clift played Dr. John Cukrowicz, the young psychiatrist tasked with evaluating Catharine Holly's sanity. His casting was highly publicized because he had recently suffered a severe, near-fatal car accident that altered his face, and the film was one of his first major roles following the incident.
