The Syrian Revolution began in March 2011, when protests inspired by the Arab Spring erupted against the government of President Bashar al-Assad and were met with lethal crackdowns. The uprising escalated into a multisided civil war involving the regime, rebel factions, jihadist groups such as Islamic State, Kurdish forces, and foreign powers including Russia and Iran. The war killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced more than half of Syria's pre-war population, both internally and as refugees abroad. A rapid opposition offensive in late 2024 toppled the Assad government, and Assad fled to Russia in December 2024.
