The brand was founded by Charles Tanqueray in the Bloomsbury district of London in 1830. He dedicated himself to crafting a gin of uncompromising quality using exotic botanicals sourced from around the world. The recipe he perfected eventually became the benchmark for London Dry gin.

While classic Tanqueray relies on an 1830 recipe emphasizing juniper and angelica root, Tanqueray No. Ten is distilled with a focus on fresh citrus. Tanqueray No. Ten incorporates whole grapefruits, oranges, and limes, resulting in a smoother, fruitier spirit. It is named after the 'Tiny Ten' still used at the distillery.

In the United States and many other export markets, standard Tanqueray London Dry Gin is bottled at 43.1% ABV (or 86.2 proof). This slightly higher proof helps the botanicals cut through when mixed in cocktails. In the UK and Europe, it is occasionally found at a slightly lower 37.5% ABV.
