Tetiaroa Lagoon

Tetiaroa Lagoon is located inside a coral atoll in the Windward Society Islands of French Polynesia. It sits about 33 miles north of the heavily populated island of Tahiti. The lagoon is entirely surrounded by a ring of small coral islets, known locally as motus.

The legendary actor Marlon Brando purchased the Tetiaroa atoll in 1966 after filming *Mutiny on the Bounty* in the area. He originally built a small, rustic hotel on the atoll to serve as his personal sanctuary and a honeymoon spot. Today, the atoll is home to an ultra-exclusive luxury resort called The Brando.

Tourists can visit Tetiaroa Lagoon, but access is highly restricted because the atoll is privately owned. Visitors must be guests of the incredibly expensive Brando eco-resort, which is accessible only by private plane from Tahiti. The strict privacy ensures the pristine waters and unique ecological habitats remain heavily protected.

The lagoon and its surrounding motus serve as a crucial nesting ground for a massive population of seabirds, including terns and red-tailed tropicbirds. Green sea turtles also frequently use the calm, protected waters of the lagoon to lay their eggs on the beaches. The area is heavily monitored by conservationists to protect these fragile ecosystems.
