The Black Crook is an 1866 theatrical spectacle written by Charles M. Barras and first staged at Niblo's Garden in New York City. It combined melodrama with music, elaborate scenery, dance, and a large ballet company, and its original production ran for 474 performances. Often discussed as an early precursor to the American musical, it is also important to histories of nineteenth-century spectacle, burlesque, and Broadway theater.
