The Covered Wagon

The Covered Wagon is based on the 1922 novel of the same name by Emerson Hough, which was serialized in Saturday Evening Post before book publication. Hough's novel was a bestseller and helped fuel public fascination with the Oregon Trail era. The film adaptation by Paramount Pictures closely followed the novel's narrative of a wagon train journey from Kansas to Oregon.

J. Warren Kerrigan stars as wagon leader Will Banion and Lois Wilson co-stars as Molly Wingate. The film was directed by James Cruze, a prolific silent-era filmmaker. The supporting cast includes Alan Hale Sr. and Ernest Torrence in prominent roles.

The Covered Wagon was a major commercial hit for Paramount Pictures and is considered one of the first epic-scale Westerns in Hollywood history. The production reportedly cost over $1 million, an enormous sum for the era, and used hundreds of extras with real covered wagons. It helped establish the Western as a viable prestige genre rather than just low-budget shorts.

Director James Cruze shot the film on location in areas around Oregon and other western landscapes rather than relying on studio backdrops. The river-crossing sequences were particularly notable for their scale and authenticity. Some additional footage was reportedly shot in California.
