The Leftovers

The show takes place three years after a global event known as the 'Sudden Departure,' where exactly 2% of the world's population mysteriously vanishes into thin air without explanation. It focuses heavily on the emotional fallout, grief, and the bizarre existential coping mechanisms that emerge. The story centers on the Garvey family in a small town in New York.

The series was created by acclaimed showrunner Damon Lindelof, known for his work on 'Lost,' alongside author Tom Perrotta. The show is actually based on a 2011 novel of the same name written by Perrotta. While the first season closely follows the book, subsequent seasons move far beyond the novel's original narrative.

The Guilty Remnant is a heavily featured, silent cult within the show whose members dress entirely in white and chain-smoke cigarettes. Their primary objective is to physically follow and remind the rest of the population that they must never forget the Sudden Departure. They believe that trying to move on with normal life is a betrayal to those who vanished.

While critically acclaimed for its incredible acting and profound storytelling, the show struggled with consistently low linear television ratings on HBO. Rather than abruptly canceling it, HBO allowed creator Damon Lindelof to craft a definitive, satisfying conclusion. This resulted in a deliberate and universally praised finale airing in 2017.
