The Metamorphosis

While commonly depicted as a cockroach or beetle in pop culture, Franz Kafka's original German text uses the word "Ungeziefer," which translates closer to "vermin" or "monstrous insect." Gregor never physically speaks to clarify his exact species, leaving his transformation purposefully ambiguous to emphasize his grotesque alienation from his family.

Gregor dies after his father throws an apple that lodges and rots in his back, severely weakening him. He eventually succumbs to his injury and starvation early in the morning, a event that ultimately brings a sense of relief to his struggling family.

Gregor's sister is Grete Samsa, who initially takes on the role of his caretaker by bringing him food like spoiled milk and bread. However, as Gregor's condition deteriorates and the family's financial burden grows, Grete eventually advocates for getting rid of him.

The novella primarily explores themes of alienation, the dehumanizing effects of modern capitalism, and shifting family dynamics. Gregor's physical transformation manifests the way his family and employer already view him as a disposable tool rather than a human being.
