description The Momo Challenge Overview
The Momo Challenge was an internet hoax and moral panic that spread through social media and news coverage in 2018 and 2019. It falsely claimed that a frightening sculpture image, associated with WhatsApp accounts or edited children's videos, was used to send children instructions for dangerous acts, including self-harm. Fact-checkers, police, and child-safety groups found no verified evidence of a coordinated challenge causing the reported harms, although the viral warnings themselves caused distress.
