The Parallax View

After several witnesses to Senator Charles Carroll's assassination die under suspicious circumstances, reporter Joe Frady begins investigating the pattern. He applies to the Parallax Corporation under a false identity after discovering that it recruits people with violent psychological profiles.

The montage is presented as part of the corporation's psychological screening process, pairing words such as "mother," "country," and "enemy" with increasingly disturbing images. Alan J. Pakula uses the sequence to show how Parallax identifies or conditions potential assassins without explaining the process through dialogue.

The story is fictional and adapted from Loren Singer's novel, but its conspiracy atmosphere reflects American distrust following the Kennedy assassinations and Watergate. The 1974 film opens with a killing at Seattle's Space Needle that echoes real public assassinations without recreating one directly.

It is commonly grouped with Klute and All the President's Men as Pakula's paranoia trilogy. Warren Beatty's isolated reporter faces a hidden corporate conspiracy here, while All the President's Men follows reporters uncovering the real Watergate scandal.
