The Realm

The film follows Manuel López-Vidal, a Spanish regional politician whose comfortable place inside a corrupt party collapses when a scandal becomes public. He tries to protect himself by exposing colleagues who are prepared to make him the sole scapegoat.

Antonio de la Torre plays Manuel López-Vidal, delivering the film's central performance as a politician moving from confidence to panic. His work earned the Goya Award for Best Actor at the 33rd Goya Awards.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen uses rapid dialogue, restless camera movement, and Olivier Arson's insistent electronic score to turn meetings and car rides into suspense sequences. The approach treats political maneuvering with the pace of a chase thriller.

The story is fictional rather than a direct dramatization of one named case. Its party networks, hidden accounts, and media pressure nevertheless evoke the corruption scandals that shaped Spanish politics in the years before the film's 2018 release.
