The Reckless Moment

Joan Bennett plays Lucia Harper, a mother trying to protect her daughter after a suspicious death. James Mason plays Martin Donnelly, a blackmailer whose role becomes more complicated as the story develops.

The film has noir elements such as blackmail, crime, secrecy, and moral pressure, but it is centered on a domestic family crisis. Max Ophuls uses the home and seaside setting to make ordinary respectability feel fragile.

The Reckless Moment was directed by Max Ophuls and released in 1949. It is one of his American films, made before the later French works that secured much of his international reputation.

The Deep End, released in 2001 and starring Tilda Swinton, is a later adaptation of the same source material. Both stories turn a parent's attempt to protect a child into a tense cover-up and blackmail situation.
