The Rivalry

The rivalry between Lehigh University and Lafayette College is officially recognized as the longest continuously played rivalry contest in American college football. The very first game was played in 1884, and the teams have met every single year since. The annual matchup draws massive interest from alumni of both Pennsylvania institutions.

The location of "The Rivalry" alternates annually between Fisher Stadium at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and Goodman Stadium at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. This tradition allows both universities to host the massive influx of returning alumni every other year. The traveling trophy for the game is the Patriot League championship implications.

It is simply and boldly known as "The Rivalry" because of its sheer longevity and intense local passion, dating all the way back to 1884. The two schools are located less than 20 miles apart in eastern Pennsylvania. It predates other famous college football matchups by several years, making it a historic pillar of the sport.

As of recent seasons, Lehigh and Lafayette have faced each other well over 150 times, making it one of the most played matchups in college football history. The incredibly high number of games is a direct result of the uninterrupted streak that began in the late 19th century. The series record is famously close, adding to the tension every November.
