The Songlines

Published in 1987, The Songlines explores the Indigenous Australian concept of songlines, which are invisible, interconnected pathways mapped through music and stories. The book examines how Aboriginal Australians used these songs to navigate vast ancestral journeys across the Australian outback.

While classified as a travelogue, The Songlines is a hybrid work that blends factual reporting with Chatwin's own philosophical musings and semi-fictionalized conversations. Many critics and anthropologists noted that Chatwin took creative liberties to mold the Aboriginal culture to fit his nomadic theories.

Much of the narrative revolves around Chatwin's travels with Arkady Volchok, a Russian-Australian man who is mapping sacred Aboriginal sites to protect them from railway development. Through Arkady, Chatwin learns how the songlines connect the Dreamtime mythology to the physical landscape.

While the central narrative explores the Australian desert, the final third of the book consists of Chatwin's notebook entries detailing his global theories on human evolution and nomadism. He jumps between topics in Europe and Africa, arguing that human beings are inherently meant to be migratory walkers rather than settlers.
