The Spoilers

Although occasionally mislabeled, the 1942 version of The Spoilers is primarily a Western adventure film rather than a comedy. Directed by Ray Enright, it blends romantic tension with classic frontier action set during the Alaskan gold rush. It features the iconic leading trio of John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich, and Randolph Scott.

John Wayne stars alongside Marlene Dietrich, who plays the saloon girl Cherry Malotte, and Randolph Scott, who plays the corrupt gold commissioner Roy Glennister's rival. The chemistry between Wayne and Dietrich was a major draw for audiences at the time. The film also featured Harry Carey in a supporting role.

The 1942 version is actually the fourth film adaptation of Rex Beach's 1906 novel of the same name. Previous silent and early talkie versions were released in 1914, 1923, and 1930. The 1942 film remains the most famous and celebrated adaptation of the classic gold rush story.

The Spoilers is incredibly famous for its extended, brutal fistfight climax between John Wayne's character and Randolph Scott's corrupt antagonist. The brawl destroys an entire room set and is largely considered one of the most hard-hitting fight sequences of classic Hollywood. The stunt work in this sequence set a new standard for cinematic combat.
