The Trauco

The Trauco is a mythical, short, and powerful forest creature deeply rooted in the folklore of Chile's Chiloé Archipelago. It is traditionally described as being incredibly ugly but possessing a hypnotic charm. According to legend, it wanders the dense woods carrying a small, magical wooden axe.

Yes, the Trauco is frequently accompanied by his wife, the Fiura, who is a small, hideous female creature of the woods. The Fiura is known for bathing in icy water and is said to curse anyone who looks upon her with twisted limbs or sudden illness. Together, they rule the deep forests of the archipelago.

Rather than using physical force, the Trauco relies on his mesmerizing gaze and a magical, dwarf-sized wooden club called a 'pahueldún.' It is said that just looking into his eyes is enough to put a woman into a deep, compliant trance. He uses his magic to disarm his victims rather than fighting them.
