The White Balloon

The film won the prestigious Caméra d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, awarded for the best first feature film presented. This massive international recognition helped put contemporary Iranian cinema on the global map. It beat out numerous other international debuts to secure the honor.

The entire 80-minute runtime of the film unfolds in real-time over a single day leading up to the Iranian New Year. The narrative follows a young girl's desperate, minute-by-minute quest to buy a specific goldfish. This 1:1 pacing builds incredible tension as she continuously loses her money in the busy streets.

While Jafar Panahi directed the movie, the screenplay was written by the acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. The collaboration between these two cinematic masters resulted in a beautifully simple yet deeply emotional story. Kiarostami was known for writing scripts centered around the innocent perspectives of children.

The main character, Razieh, is obsessed with buying a specific, chubby white goldfish that she saw in a local pet shop. This seemingly trivial purchase is culturally significant, as the fish is meant to bring good luck for the Nowruz (Iranian New Year) celebrations. She believes the traditional red fish are not as lucky as the white one.
