Three Monkeys

Three Monkeys is a 2008 drama directed by the acclaimed Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Ceylan is known for his slow-burn, atmospheric storytelling and also co-wrote the screenplay for the film. It was produced through Ceylan's production company.

The film was selected as Turkey’s official entry for consideration in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. However, it ultimately did not receive a nomination from the Academy for that year's ceremony. Despite the snub, it was highly celebrated on the global festival circuit.

The film tells the story of a family attempting to cover up a hit-and-run accident to secure a financial payout, exploring the resulting moral decay. As secrets, lies, and infidelity plague the household, the family begins to unravel psychologically. The title references the proverb of the three wise monkeys who see, hear, and speak no evil.

Three Monkeys premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where Nuri Bilge Ceylan was awarded the Best Director prize. The film was highly praised for its stark, moody cinematography and its intense psychological depth. This win firmly established Ceylan as a master of international cinema.
