Tool

Tool consists of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor, and drummer Danny Carey. Chancellor replaced the band's original bassist, Paul D'Amour, in 1995, right around the recording of their second album, "Ænima." The quartet has remained unchanged since then, maintaining a highly unified, progressive sound.

Tool's 2001 single "Schism" is famous for its incredibly complex, shifting time signatures, which helped earn the band a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. The song predominantly shifts between 5/8, 7/8, and other odd meters, creating a highly unique rhythmic feel. Drummer Danny Carey is renowned for his ability to anchor the band through these polyrhythmic changes.

Tool is notorious for long gaps between albums, with their most recent release, "Fear Inoculum," arriving 13 years after 2006's "10,000 Days." The band members often pursue side projects, with Maynard James Keenan spending significant time at his winery in Arizona and fronting other bands like A Perfect Circle. Additionally, the band has historically faced complex legal battles and contract disputes that delayed their writing process.

Tool is generally classified as progressive metal and alternative metal, heavily blending the aggressive downtuned guitar riffs of metal with the complex, extended structures of progressive rock. Their music also incorporates elements of art rock and experimental music. They are widely considered pioneers of the progressive metal movement alongside bands like Rush and King Crimson.
