Tour de l'Avenir

The Tour de l'Avenir is restricted to riders under 23 years old (with a small number of older riders permitted per team) and is contested by national teams rather than the commercial trade teams that dominate professional cycling. This format is specifically designed to identify emerging talent who may become future Grand Tour contenders.

Past winners include Felice Gimondi (1964), Joop Zoetemelk (1969), Greg LeMond (1981), Laurent Fignon (1982), and Nairo Quintana (2010), many of whom went on to win Grand Tours. The race is widely regarded as one of the strongest predictors of future success in professional cycling.

The Tour de l'Avenir is held annually, typically in late August, and is usually raced across multiple regions of France. It was established in 1964 and has run nearly every year since, though it briefly shifted to an amateur open format before settling on the under-23 national-team structure.

The race usually consists of 7 to 10 stages over roughly a week and a half of racing, often including mountain stages in the Alps or Pyrenees. The route is designed to test riders' climbing, time-trialing, and overall stage-race endurance, mirroring the format of professional stage races.
