Trebah Garden

Trebah Garden is near Mawnan Smith, south of Falmouth in Cornwall, England. It occupies a sheltered valley that runs down toward the Helford River.

The valley’s shelter and relatively mild Cornish climate protect plants from some coastal exposure and frost. The garden is known for large gunnera, bamboo, tree ferns, and other moisture-loving species.

Trebah is known for its dramatic valley planting and its connection with the D-Day landings. American troops departed from Trebah Beach in June 1944 before the Normandy invasion.

The garden’s development began in the nineteenth century, although the wider site has a much longer history. Its present character reflects more than a century of planting, restoration, and twentieth-century ownership changes.
