The album heavily explores themes of adolescence, the loss of childhood innocence, and the transition into adulthood in Dublin. Tracks like 'I Will Follow' specifically detail lead singer Bono's complex feelings regarding the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14 years old.

The original cover featured a shirtless photograph of a young boy, which led to some controversy and censorship in certain conservative markets. As a result, some early pressings of the album in North America were released with an alternative cover featuring a stretched image of the band members.

While it made a significant impact in the UK and Ireland, 'Boy' initially struggled in the United States, failing to break into the top 50 of the Billboard 200. However, the album laid the critical groundwork and touring foundation for their massive mainstream breakthroughs later in the 1980s.
