Une liaison pornographique was directed by Belgian filmmaker Frédéric Fonteyne and stars Nathalie Baye and Spanish actor Sergi López as the unnamed characters credited simply as "Elle" and "Lui" (Her and Him). López, then relatively unknown in France, gained significant recognition from this role and went on to a prominent career in French cinema.

The film follows two strangers, a woman in her forties and a man in his thirties, who meet through a personal ad and begin a purely sexual arrangement with no emotional strings attached. Over time, their relationship inevitably becomes more complex, and the story is told through retrospective documentary-style interviews with both characters.

Une liaison pornographique premiered in 1999 at the Venice Film Festival, where it screened in competition. Nathalie Baye won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance, and the film was later submitted by Belgium for consideration for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards.

Despite its provocative title, the film contains very little on-screen explicit content and is instead a thoughtful, intimate examination of human desire, vulnerability, and emotional connection. The title is somewhat ironic, as the film focuses more on the emotional dynamics between the two characters than on graphic depictions of their encounters.
