The British zoologist Reginald Innes Pocock described it in 1898, and Australian taxonomic databases list the name as accepted. It is endemic to Australia, with recorded distribution in Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory; Urodacus hillieri is treated as a synonym in some sources.
