help USMCA FAQ

When did the USMCA officially replace NAFTA?

The USMCA entered into force on July 1, 2020, replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement that had been in effect since January 1, 1994. The transition preserved much of NAFTA's tariff-free framework among the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

What did the USMCA change about auto manufacturing rules?

The USMCA raised the North American content requirement for duty-free vehicles from 62.5% under NAFTA to 75%, and required that 40–45% of a vehicle's content be made by workers earning at least $16 per hour. These provisions were aimed at shifting auto production back toward North America.

How long does the USMCA agreement last?

The USMCA includes a 16-year sunset clause, meaning the agreement expires unless all three countries agree to extend it. There is also a mandatory joint review after roughly six years to assess whether the agreement is working as intended.

What changed for the dairy industry under the USMCA?

Canada agreed to open a portion of its protected dairy market to U.S. producers, giving American farmers tariff-rate quota access that did not exist under NAFTA. This was one of the most contentious agricultural provisions negotiated between the two countries.
