description Uzbekistan Overview
Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia and one of only two doubly landlocked nations in the world. Its Silk Road cities—Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva—contain Islamic architecture such as the Registan ensemble in Samarkand and are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A Soviet republic from 1924, it became independent in 1991, and its economy has historically relied heavily on cotton cultivation. The Kyzylkum Desert covers much of its territory, and the majority of the population speaks Uzbek, a Turkic language.
