It is not strictly freshwater: records place it in western Atlantic coastal habitats, including Brazil, the Yucatan Peninsula, Louisiana, Florida, and the Bahamas, and the species tolerates a range of salinities. Its life cycle includes a free-swimming medusa and a polyp stage, and it may occur near the seabed or on submerged surfaces.
