Van Briggle Lorelei Vase

The Lorelei Vase was created by Artus Van Briggle, an American potter who originally worked for the Rookwood Pottery company. He designed this iconic piece around 1901 after moving to Colorado Springs.

The vase is an exquisite example of American Art Nouveau, depicting a woman (based on the mythological siren Lorelei) merging seamlessly into the vessel form. Her flowing hair creates the textured, organic walls of the pottery.

Artus Van Briggle successfully developed a distinctive matte glaze formula that mimicked the look of ancient Chinese ceramics. The Lorelei Vase, showcasing this breakthrough, is recognized as one of the earliest and most iconic examples of American Art Nouveau pottery.

Because of its immense artistic value, original Lorelei vases are highly prized by collectors and museums. Many examples of Van Briggle's masterwork can be found in the permanent collections of institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
