Varzea Piculet

description Varzea Piculet Overview

The Várzea Piculet (Picumnus varzeae) is a species of small woodpecker endemic to the Amazon basin in western Brazil. It specifically inhabits várzea forests, which are low-lying areas subject to seasonal flooding by nutrient-rich whitewater rivers. As a piculet, it is a diminutive bird with a short tail and a distinctively patterned head, lacking the longer anatomy of typical woodpeckers. The species forages on thin branches and twigs in the canopy, feeding primarily on small insects and their larvae.
