Vatican Necropolis

description Vatican Necropolis Overview

The Vatican Necropolis is an ancient Roman burial ground beneath St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Its street of mausoleums contains pagan and early Christian tombs, inscriptions, mosaics, and architectural remains dating mainly from the first through fourth centuries AD. Excavations conducted from 1940 to 1949 exposed the site while investigating the traditional location of Saint Peter's burial.

Unlike a catacomb, it consists largely of above-ground Roman mausoleums that were later buried beneath successive basilicas.
