W. Eugene Smith

Country Doctor was published in Life magazine in 1948. It followed Dr. Ernest Ceriani in rural Colorado and became a landmark example of the magazine photo essay.

Smith and Aileen Mioko Smith documented mercury poisoning in Minamata, Japan, in the early 1970s. Their photographs helped bring international attention to victims of industrial pollution linked to the Chisso Corporation.

Smith photographed Pittsburgh in the mid-1950s after being commissioned for a relatively limited assignment. He expanded it into a huge, difficult project with thousands of negatives, trying to capture the city as an industrial and human organism.

Smith was known for immersive, long-form photo essays rather than quick spot news. At Life, essays such as Spanish Village and Nurse Midwife used sequencing, captions, and sustained access to build narrative depth.
