Wairakei Terraces

The Wairakei Terraces are located near the town of Taupō on New Zealand's North Island, within the broader Wairakei geothermal field. This area is part of the Taupō Volcanic Zone, one of the most active geothermal regions in the world. The terraces sit close to the Waikato River, which flows out of Lake Taupō.

The terraces were formed by silica-rich hot spring water flowing over volcanic rock and gradually depositing minerals that build up into stepped formations. As the superheated water cools at the surface, dissolved silica precipitates out, creating the distinctive white and colored terrace edges. This is the same geological process that created the famous (and largely destroyed) Pink and White Terraces elsewhere in New Zealand.

The striking colors on the terraces come from a combination of mineral deposits and thermophilic (heat-loving) microorganisms that thrive in the hot water. Different temperatures and mineral concentrations support different communities of bacteria and algae, producing yellows, oranges, greens, and other hues. Silica deposition provides the white base layers that make the other colors stand out.

The natural terraces themselves are protected geothermal features and are not for bathing, but the nearby Wairakei Terraces Visitor Centre maintains purpose-built thermal pools that use water from the same geothermal source. These man-made pools allow visitors to experience the mineral-rich waters safely. The area is distinct from other Taupō-area commercial hot springs like those at Wairakei Resort.
