description Wartales Overview

Wartales is a turn-based tactical RPG set in an expansive open world. Players command a band of medieval mercenaries navigating dangerous territories and engaging in strategic combat. It's designed for players who enjoy complex decision-making, challenging combat encounters, and immersive role-playing experiences centered around leadership and survival.

help Wartales FAQ

Is Wartales actually a roguelike with permadeath and randomized runs?

Wartales is primarily an open-world tactical RPG, not a conventional run-based roguelike. Individual mercenaries can die permanently, but the campaign continues as the company explores regions, accepts contracts, and recruits replacements.

Can Wartales be played cooperatively?

Yes. Cooperative multiplayer lets players share control of a mercenary company, divide characters, and participate in turn-based battles. The campaign still includes travel, professions, wages, food, and equipment management.

What is the difference between region-locked and adaptive exploration in Wartales?

Region-locked mode gives areas relatively fixed difficulty, allowing the company to outgrow early enemies. Adaptive mode scales encounters more closely to the party, maintaining pressure but reducing the sense of overpowering old regions.

Who developed Wartales and when did it leave Early Access?

French studio Shiro Games, also known for Northgard, developed Wartales. The Windows version reached its full 1.0 release in 2023 after an Early Access period.
