Look for green leaves edged in cream or ivory and pink, funnel-shaped flowers on arching branches. It is a deciduous shrub, so the variegated foliage disappears in winter before the spring and early-summer display returns. Weigela florida is native to China, and plant collector Robert Fortune introduced the species to the gardens of the Horticultural Society in 1845. It flowers best in a sunny position with reasonably fertile, well-drained soil, although the cream margins also brighten a mixed border.
