Whitechapel

Whitechapel is a British television drama that follows London detectives as they investigate modern crimes that perfectly mirror historical cases. The series debuted in 2009 with the investigation of a contemporary copycat attempting to replicate the infamous Victorian murders of Jack the Ripper. The detectives must use historical files to catch the killer.

The show centers around a young, ambitious Detective Inspector named Joseph Chandler and his hardened, cynical partner, Detective Sergeant Ray Miles. They are often aided by a historical researcher and Ripperologist named Edward Buchan. The dynamic between modern police procedures and Buchan's historical theories drives the plot.

While the first season focuses entirely on the Jack the Ripper copycat, later seasons of Whitechapel explore other macabre historical London crimes. Subsequent series deal with gangster twins reminiscent of the Kray Twins, as well as Resurrection men and occult themes. The show uses London's dark history as a recurring anchor.

The series ran for a total of four seasons, originally airing on the ITV network. The blend of modern policing and historical horror sustained a dedicated viewership throughout its run. It concluded its final, highly stylized season in 2013.
