description Wi-Fi HaLow (802.11ah) Overview

Wi-Fi HaLow is a specialized Wi-Fi standard designed to operate in the sub-1 GHz spectrum. This allows it to achieve a much longer range and better penetration than standard Wi-Fi while retaining some of the IP compatibility benefits of the Wi-Fi family. It is a strong contender for campus-wide IoT deployments where the range of BLE is insufficient, but the complexity of LoRaWAN is overkill.

help Wi-Fi HaLow (802.11ah) FAQ

How far does Wi-Fi HaLow actually reach?

Operating in the sub-1 GHz band — around 900 MHz in the U.S. — HaLow can reach roughly a kilometer at standard power, far beyond normal 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi's tens of meters, with better wall penetration. Real-world range drops as you demand higher throughput.

Will my existing router or phone support Wi-Fi HaLow?

No — 802.11ah requires dedicated HaLow radios on both ends, and current phones and laptops don't include them. Adoption runs through dedicated gateways and IoT devices, with silicon vendors like Morse Micro leading the chip side.

How does HaLow compare with Zigbee, Bluetooth Mesh, and LoRa?

Unlike Zigbee and Bluetooth Mesh, HaLow is native IP, so devices speak the same internet protocols as regular Wi-Fi, which simplifies cloud and Matter-style integrations. Versus LoRaWAN it offers much higher data rates, though LoRa deployments can stretch farther at very low bandwidth.

What are the typical use cases for 802.11ah?

Smart-home and hotel deployments across large properties, agricultural sensors, security cameras, and campus or warehouse IoT — anywhere many low-power devices sit beyond normal Wi-Fi range. The Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying HaLow products in 2021, and the ecosystem has been growing since.
