Willem Barentsz

Willem Barentsz was a Dutch navigator who led three major expeditions in the 1590s in search of a Northeast Passage to Asia. He and his crew hoped to find an ice-free northern sea route above Russia to facilitate trade. These voyages helped bring the harsh Arctic waters to the attention of wider European audiences.

During his final expedition, Barentsz and his crew extensively mapped waters north of Russia and helped discover the archipelago of Spitsbergen. They also explored the icy coastlines of Novaya Zemlya. His charts of these regions were used by explorers for centuries.

Barentsz died in 1597 on the return voyage of his third major Arctic expedition. He passed away from scurvy and the extreme cold while his crew was trying to navigate their way back from Novaya Zemlya in small open boats. His surviving crew members eventually made it back to the Netherlands.
