description William Lassell Overview
William Lassell was an English brewer who pursued astronomy and built large reflecting telescopes for observing faint objects. In 1846 he discovered Triton, the largest moon of Neptune. He later discovered Uranus's moons Ariel and Umbriel and co-discovered Saturn's moon Hyperion. Lassell's observations expanded nineteenth-century knowledge of the outer planets and their satellites, while his instrument making supported the use of larger apertures in astronomical research.
