Wilson Butte Cave

Wilson Butte Cave is a basalt lava tube located in southern Idaho, north of the city of Twin Falls. It sits on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The cave is a well-known archaeological and geological site in the Snake River Plain.

The cave holds significant historical importance as one of the earliest known sites of human habitation in North America. Archaeological investigations within the cave provided valuable insights into the presence of ancient hunter-gatherers. Excavations have revealed evidence of human occupation dating back nearly 15,000 years.

Currently, public access inside Wilson Butte Cave is restricted or closed to protect the fragile archaeological resources and for safety reasons. The BLM manages the site, and while you can walk up to the exterior and read informational signs, entering the depths is generally not permitted. This helps preserve the remaining artifacts for future study.

Archaeological digs at the site uncovered a variety of ancient tools, including stone projectile points, scrapers, and animal bones. These artifacts helped scientists understand the diet and lifestyle of the ancient peoples who lived there. The cave was used as a temporary shelter during hunting trips on the plains.
