Worms Cathedral

Worms Cathedral is associated with the 1521 Diet of Worms, but Luther's formal appearance was not simply a cathedral service. The Diet took place in Worms, and the cathedral remains the city's most visible monument from that era.

It was the cathedral church of the old Diocese of Worms, which no longer exists in the same form. The building is still a major Romanesque church dedicated to St Peter.

Its heavy masonry, rounded arches, twin choirs, domes, and four towers are classic features of Romanesque architecture. Much of the present building was constructed between about 1130 and 1181.

Worms is often discussed with Speyer Cathedral and Mainz Cathedral as one of the great Romanesque imperial cathedrals on the Rhine. All three are tied to medieval power, bishops, and the Holy Roman Empire.
