Yatsu-higata

The Yatsu-higata is a tidal flat located in Narashino City within Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It is highly unique because it is entirely enclosed by urban development, highways, and factories.

It received the Ramsar designation because it serves as a crucial stopover site for thousands of migratory shorebirds traveling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Despite its small size and urban surroundings, it supports over 60 species of birds.

The mudflats are heavily populated with migratory shorebirds, including species like the dunlin, black-bellied plover, and endangered species like the spoon-billed sandpiper during migration seasons. Visitors at the Yatsu Tideland Observation Center can use telescopes to view these feeding flocks.

Preservation efforts are managed by local government initiatives and volunteer groups who regularly clean the mudflats to prevent trash accumulation. The conservation of this wetland relies heavily on environmental education and community awareness programs.
