Yellow River Delta

The Yellow River carries one of the highest sediment loads of any major river in the world, and as it enters the Bohai Sea in Shandong Province, this material rapidly deposits and builds new land. In active areas near the river mouth, the delta can extend outward by hundreds of meters in a single year.

Yes—the modern delta is geologically very young because the Yellow River shifted to its current course into the Bohai Sea only in 1855, after a major flood redirected it from its previous southward route. The current delta has been building continuously since that diversion.

The Shandong Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve was established to protect the delta's extensive wetlands, mudflats, and estuary ecosystems. It provides critical habitat for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian flyway, including red-crowned cranes and other endangered species.

The delta is located in Shandong Province in eastern China, where the Yellow River empties into the Bohai Sea. The city of Dongying is the primary urban center near the active river mouth and serves as a base for visiting the delta's wetlands.
