Zellig Harris (1909–1992) was an American structural linguist at the University of Pennsylvania. He developed methods of distributional analysis, in which linguistic elements are defined by their co-occurrence patterns, and introduced transformational analysis of sentence structure in the 1950s. His student Noam Chomsky extended this work into generative grammar, while Harris's distributional ideas continue to underpin much of modern computational linguistics.
