Zhangye Danxia Landform

description Zhangye Danxia Landform Overview

The Zhangye Danxia landforms are a group of colorful eroded hills near Zhangye in Gansu Province, northwestern China. Alternating mineral-rich layers of sandstone and other sedimentary rock were tilted by tectonic forces and subsequently carved into ridges, cliffs, and gullies by weathering and erosion. Their exposed bands of red, orange, yellow, green, and pale rock make the area a recognized scenic and geological destination, commonly associated with Zhangye National Geopark.

help Zhangye Danxia Landform FAQ

What creates the rainbow colors at Zhangye Danxia?

Different sediment layers contain varying minerals and iron compounds, producing red, yellow, brown and paler bands. Tectonic uplift tilted the strata, after which wind and water erosion exposed them as ridges and folded hills.

Where is the main Zhangye Danxia viewing area?

The best-known developed scenic area is near Zhangye in China's Gansu Province. Visitors move between designated viewing platforms that overlook different sections of the multicolored hills.

When do the colors at Zhangye Danxia look strongest?

Low-angle sunlight near morning or evening can emphasize the contours and color contrasts. Rain can temporarily deepen the tones, but weather, visibility and seasonal access should be checked locally.

Can visitors walk freely across the striped hills?

Tourists are generally kept to boardwalks, roads and observation platforms rather than being allowed to climb across the formations. Restricting foot traffic protects the soft, erosion-prone surface and its visible mineral bands.
