Zheng He

Zheng He commanded seven Ming-sponsored maritime expeditions between 1405 and 1433. The fleets sailed through Southeast Asia and across the Indian Ocean to Arabia and East Africa.

Ming sources describe enormous treasure ships, but the most dramatic traditional dimensions remain debated by historians because physical evidence is limited. What is clear is that Zheng He's expeditions involved large fleets containing multiple types of vessels, not one uniform ship design.

The voyages projected imperial authority, conducted diplomacy, carried gifts, and reinforced tributary and commercial relationships. They were state-sponsored missions, especially associated with the ambitions of the Yongle emperor.

Later Ming governments shifted priorities away from costly long-distance expeditions and toward domestic and northern frontier concerns. The program ended after the seventh voyage in the early 1430s rather than continuing as a permanent naval expansion.
