description Zipang Overview
A Ripple in Time Turns the Crucial Tide of WWII. Scheduled for routine military exercises, Commander Kadomatsu and the crew of Japan's newest and most modern Battlecruiser, The Mirai, are ready to test out the ship's state-of-the-art Aegis System. Instead, they find themselves transported back to June 4th, 1942—date of the crucial Battle of Midway, where the Japanese fleet was dealt a crippling blow. When an overzealous Kadomatsu rescues one of the battle's victims, Kusaka, from a sinking zero fighter, the Mirai's fate is sealed.
The crew pledges not to do anything to alter the past further. However, they're now forced to fight a U.S. submarine in a battle that should never have occurred.
help Zipang FAQ
How does the modern destroyer Mirai end up in World War II?
During a training voyage, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship Mirai passes through a strange atmospheric event and emerges in June 1942. Its crew must operate near the Battle of Midway while possessing weapons and historical knowledge unavailable to either wartime side.
Is the Mirai a real Japanese warship?
No. Mirai is fictional, although its Aegis combat system and many design details draw on modern guided-missile destroyers. The crew's Self-Defense Force rules create a deliberate contrast with the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Who is Kusaka in Zipang?
Lieutenant Commander Takumi Kusaka is an Imperial Japanese Navy officer rescued by Mirai's executive officer, Yosuke Kadomatsu. After learning about Japan's future defeat, Kusaka begins pursuing an alternative history he calls Zipang.
Does the Zipang anime complete the manga?
No. The television adaptation runs for 26 episodes and covers only an early portion of Kaiji Kawaguchi's much longer manga. Its final episode leaves the historical struggle between Kadomatsu and Kusaka unresolved.
