Zwiefalten Abbey

The present church of Zwiefalten Abbey is a massive, breathtaking example of late Baroque and Rococo architecture in Upper Swabia. Completed in the 18th century, the interior is a masterpiece of spatial design that heavily utilizes sweeping curves and theatrical lighting.

The abbey church is highly celebrated for its monumental frescoed ceilings, painted by the master artist Franz Joseph Spiegler. These ceiling frescoes are dramatically complemented by an array of gilded stucco ornaments and intricate choir stalls carved by local artisans.

The original monastery at Zwiefalten was founded in 1089 by monks from the Black Forest. However, the magnificent church structure that stands today was built much later, consecrated in 1765 after decades of architectural expansion.

Following the secularization of Germany in the early 19th century, the former abbey complex was repurposed and now functions as a psychiatric hospital. Despite this modern medical use, the stunning church itself is open to the public and remains a major stop on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route.
