Wanjina Rock Art

Wandjina are commonly portrayed with halo-like heads, prominent round eyes and no visible mouth. Their meaning belongs to the living traditions of the Ngarinyin, Wunambal and Worora peoples, so the imagery should not be reduced to a purely Western visual interpretation.

Wandjina beings are strongly associated with rain, clouds, fertility and the seasonal regeneration of the Kimberley. Their pale faces and surrounding arcs are often understood in relation to weather and water.

The Wandjina painting tradition is generally considered several thousand years old, although individual images can be much newer because custodians renewed them. It is distinct from the considerably older Gwion Gwion tradition also found in the Kimberley.

Rules depend on the specific site and its Traditional Owners, and some sacred places restrict access or photography. Visitors should follow local signage and guidance from Ngarinyin, Wunambal or Worora custodians rather than assuming every Kimberley shelter is open.
